Boiler protection is commonplace

Nowadays, there is almost nothing that can’t be covered by insurance, from the health of dogs to safety of pda’s. Of course, some things are more important to get covered than others and, with the likes of motor insurance, you may be legally required to do so. Buildings insurance is required by the finance lender when an individual takes out a home mortgage. Insurance offers security against unanticipated events that can severely affect life and property.

Moving a step down the ladder of importance we find gas central heating insurance, such as the products offered by British Gas. These policies are used only rarely while in reality it should be the opposite because even though their rank in terms of one’s need don’t match that of insuring the actual house, the central heating system of a home is an absolute need and fixing it can be costly. The other problem is that actually getting someone to repair it can take time, and living without hot water or heating is no fun, especially in winter. More worryingly is the prospect of a faulty system leaking carbon monoxide, which can be fatal.

A wide choice of plans exist in the market for both central heating system servicing and central heating repair. The most basic types are generally just service plans that fulfil the minimum requirements, including annual servicing and safety checks. In such a plan, the cost of repair and spare parts is separately billed, some of the better quality plans include this enhanced cover. For as long as the central heating boiler is under warranty, the manufacturer pays for spare parts and repairs; but it is advisable to upgrade a basic plan to full cover with a little additional payment. Particularly if a gas boiler is getting close to the end of its working life, this extra money is well spent. You can extend your policy to cover other things too, besides the central heating boiler like radiators and other parts of the central heating system or even plumbing, drains and home electrics cover.

Sometimes the insurance company sets limits or clauses of exemption even in a full cover plan, hence it is important to read the fine print. Some insurers place an upper limit on the amount of repair calls made per year or define a ceiling level for the cost of maintenance for a specific period. As should be done for all other kinds of insurance, don’t simply select an insurance policy with the lowest cost without examining the level of coverage and ascertaining it fulfills your requirements and that of your gas central heating system.
